We host specially-themed hikes several times throughout the year.

First Day Hike 2024

What better way to kick off the New Year than by getting a jump start burning off those extra holiday calories in the great outdoors? First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. These hikes provide a means for individuals and families to welcome the coming year in the outdoors, exercising and connecting with nature. For many it has become a tradition.

Commemorative pins are available for participants while supplies last.

This year, join us for a 1.5-mile loop hike at George Washington State Campground on January 1 from 10am – 1pm.

Leashed dogs are allowed if the leash is no longer than six feet. The trail is on uneven ground; jogging stroller-friendly. Children must be always accompanied by an adult. There will be outdoor information tables and activities stationed along the path. The walk will be held rain or shine, so DEM encourages participants to dress accordingly.

Remember, hunting season is in full swing. Orange clothing is not required for the guided hike since it is within the state campground, but we recommend you wear 200 square inches (hat or vest) in case you plan on extending your hike into the surrounding management area.

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. To make it easy, state parks from Maine to California – are offering free First Day Hikes on January 1. The guided hikes are led by park staff members and volunteers with expert knowledge of their respective locales. The National Association of State Park Directors promotes and advocates for the state park systems across America in providing conservation and management of natural and cultural resources, quality outdoor recreation experiences, and connecting children and families to nature and the outdoors. With more than 6,800 park areas and visitation of 813 million people annually, the economic impact to local communities is estimated to exceed $20 billion each year.  America’s State Parks is an alliance of state park systems in all 50 states.
