The City of Warwick, in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), is working on a project to enhance the entrances of Rocky Point Park to improve access, safety, and the overall visitor experience. Rocky Point Park includes City-owned coastal land and State-owned interior land on the Warwick Neck peninsula. In 2020, the City developed a conceptual plan to improve the park’s entrances.
The project focuses on enhancing the park entrances (referred to as gateways):
- Southern Gateway (City Entry): Improvements to the City-owned parking lot with a pedestrian plaza and enhanced vehicle and foot traffic circulation at the intersection of Palmer Avenue and Rocky Point Avenue.
- Northern Gateway (State Entry): Enhanced access, safety, and visibility along Palmer Avenue.
- Improved pedestrian connections, traffic flow, and overall arrival experience.
Project Benefits
The Gateway Project is designed to deliver long-term benefits for park users, the surrounding neighborhood, and the environment, including:
- Safety improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles
- Improved water quality through upgraded drainage and stormwater management
- Increased resilience to coastal impacts and extreme weather
- Sustainable design solutions that support long-term park stewardship
- Beautification of park entrances and public spaces
- Enhanced circulation within and between park access points
- Improved accessibility for visitors of all ages and abilities
- Enhanced amenities that improve comfort, orientation, and usability
Community Engagement
Public input is a key part of this project. The design process will include multiple opportunities for residents, park users, and stakeholders to review plans and share feedback before designs are finalized.
